Two Day Workshop Outline
Day 1 (1PM – 9PM)
Jake Garn Photoshoot (about 20 minutes)
Watch Jake Garn perform a photoshoot with a professionally styled, experienced model from beginning to end. During this shoot Jake Garn will pretend the class isn’t there so you can observe his actual interaction with the model.
Introduction (about 30 minutes)
- Introduce the creative team that makes it all happen
- Tips on finding models, hairstylists, makeup artists and wardrobe stylists to shoot with
- Tips on organizing photo shoots with models and stylists
- Finding your unique style
Posing Module (about 20 minutes)
- Conversation techniques during the shoot
- Differences in working with new models or experienced models
- Posing for the light
- Posing to eliminate unflattering angles and wrinkles
- Posing to emphasize strongest features
Lighting Module (about 20 minutes)
- Introduction to different lighting concepts including natural and studio lighting
- Demonstrating different lighting setups
- Reading a histogram
Jake Garn Talks you Through A Photoshoot (about 30 minutes)
Jake Garn will demonstrate another actual shoot from start to finish, this time interacting and discussing different concepts with the class as he shoots.
Hands on Shoot assisted by Ryan Muirhead and Jake Garn (about 4 hours)
We will break off into separate groups of four people each and you will have the opportunity to apply what you learned with professional lighting, professional models, and a professional styling team.
- Each participant will have the opportunity to shoot two separate models in two different light setups for 25 minutes each
- Professional wardrobe stylist, makeup artist and hairstylist from my hand-picked creative team all on-set
- Signed model releases so you can use the images in your own portfolio
Q and A with the Creative Team (about 30 Minutes)
The professional styling team made available for any questions you have.
Editing and Processing Raw Images with Adobe Lightroom (about 1.5 hours)
- Jake will show you how he sorts and selects the final images
- Advantages of RAW vs. JPG
- Color correction and fine tuning techniques
- Using and Creating Presets
Day 2 (1PM-9PM)
Retouching with Adobe Photoshop (about 1 hour)
- Destructive vs. Non-destructive editing techniques
- Fixing Skin
- Dodging and Burning (multiple techniques)
- Using Photoshop Actions
- Using Curves/Layers
- Using Layer Masks
- Replacing an image background using photoshop plugins
Watch Jake Garn photograph a bride using flashes (about 40 minutes)
Watch as Jake Garn demonstrates an on-location whimsical Bridal Shoot
Watch Ryan Muirhead photograph a bride using natural light (about 40 minutes)
Ryan Muirhead will walk you through natural lighting techniques he uses to get amazing results
You Photograph bridals in natural light assisted by Ryan Muirhead (about 2.5 hours)*
- You will be in groups of two, one shooting and one assisting, with Ryan Muirhead available for advice and questions
- You get to photograph at least two models professionally styled in wedding dresses
- You will have about 30 minutes per model
- Professional wardrobe stylist, makeup artist and hairstylist from my hand-picked creative team all on-set
- Signed model releases so you can use the images in your own portfolio!
Watch an actual Test Shoot and have Lunch With Jake Garn (about 2.5 hours)*
- Watch the spontaneous creativity in action as Jake Garn does a whimsical test shoot with a girl he’s never worked with before. No styling or pre-planned concepts, watch the improvisation in action! Not only will Jake Garn photograph multiple looks but you’ll also watch his coaching techniques in action as well as the creative process he uses to come up with whimsical ideas.
- Jake Garn will take you, along with 8 other class members, out to lunch and talk about whatever comes up.
