Lighting Tools 101 :: A Class By Jake Garn

6-6-2011 Update: CLASS IS FULL! In a couple of weeks I will be hosting a free class on Lighting Tools, from sun to strobes and lots of things in between.  The class will be held in Northern Utah and will be invitation only.  The cost?  Well, it's free. Harsh Shadows

As a photographer I love an overcast sky.  The soft milky light just seems to drip into every shadow and give it an effervescent glow, I usually flee from the bright sun and the harsh shadows it leaves in it's wake. Pants on the Ground

Years ago Katherine and I used to shoot in downtown Salt Lake City almost weekly and last week we decided to take a nostalgic trip down memory lane and do it again.  All natural light, just me, my camera and Katherine. I usually don't shoot on-location in Salt Lake City anymore, just too many people around... This time we went almost 6 full minutes without some guy yelling something moronic out the window of his truck.  Three dudes, the guy in the back seat yells, "Nice ass!" as they drive by. Sure, I was flattered, especially since I don't even work out, but seriously, why is it that the majority...

Falling in Love with Simplicity

I have re-fallen in love with photography again, almost over night.  One of the things that has been most helpful is abandoning all the complexity and just going back to my roots, just driving around with my camera in hand and a model. Natural light, sets built by nature and a little bit of time can yield some very satisfying results.
