4 Years of Carly Stark

In July of 2007 I received an email from a 17-year old girl named Carly Stark.  I think I emailed her back less than 24-hours later. Do you ever feel like you catch a glimpse of your future in a single moment, but all the thoughts and images go through your brain so fast that you can't hold onto any of them long enough to remember? I like to think that in the moment I met Carly I saw the next four years of images flash through my brain, all 91 of these, but they left just a bit too quickly to grasp. For reasons beyond my ability to explain I felt like we had to rediscover these elusive shots......

Color Outside the Lines

"Imagination is more important than knowledge." -Albert Einstein (1931) In 5th grade I didn't really care for school much.  One day I decided I had enough. I refused to catch the bus, forcing my dad to drive me to Morgan Elementary and drop me off an hour late at the front door. I walked inside and watched out the window as he pulled away, off to work.  When he was out of sight I walked back outside, weighed my options and decided to walk back home.  My mom was quite surprised when I showed up in time for lunch. I was 10 or 11 years old. True story. I eventually went back after being bribed...

Sorting through model requests: A Photographer's guide

At some point in my life I started to get a bit overwhelmed with requests about photoshoots, specifically test shoots.  At first it was extremely flattering to be approached by complete strangers about shooting but after awhile, as the number of requests multiplied, it just became stressful, not to mention time-consuming. Over the years I have tried various ways to systematize the process and in 2010 I decided to REALLY work on a solution.  I created a form on my website (details on setting it up are later in this post) which allowed me to do a couple things easily. Collect ALL the information...

Katherine: My first muse.

What is your Secret? (EDIT 4/2/11 - I updated this with a new HD video, much better than before) The secret is this.  Fall in love often and recklessly.  Fall in love with your camera, fall in love with natural light, fall in love with the Elinchrom Octa, fall in love with your film but most of all... fall in love with your muse. Rinse and repeat for years, maybe even a decade. I've been thinking a lot about muses lately. Muse is defined as "the source of an artist's inspiration" which means it could be just about anything. I think models have always been a huge source of inspiration,...
