It’s Opposite Day!

Opposite

Day

It was an aggressive project… months in the making… lots of coordination… and lots of planning.  The idea was to style individual models in opposite ways and combine the results into a series of images.  The entire creative team bounced around dozens of ideas and in the end settled on five concepts: flame/frost, wet/dry, black/white, sweet/sour, and serene/chaos.

Beyond the absolutely mind-blowingly creative styling the hardest part on my end was shooting a girl with one look, having her go back for another hour or two of styling, and then positioning her in such a way that I could later seemlessly combine the looks into a single composite.  And if that wasn’t hard enough we ran into a highly unusual snag…

After shooting the Sweet and Sour series some very unfortunate luck hit… the Sour images required a re-shoot as a data failure made them inexplicably disappear.  Due to crazy schedules, exotic Mexican swine flus, and random vacationing we were not able to re-schedule all involved for well over a month… which meant by the time we were able to re-shoot all the lighting, posing, and positioning of the camera and lens had to be carefully re-set to mimic a month old shoot.  No easy task.

Bad luck turned into good as the new images fit together seemlessly and a project that was months in the making is finally complete!

Enjoy.

Lighting

Diagrams

I get lots of questions about lighting, so I thought I’d layout some shots and how I lit (or is it lighted?) them.  Hopefully this will be fairly informative, let me know what you think and if you have any special requests!  Illustrations that I used to create these diagrams are courtesy of photographer Kevin Kertz.Octadome
